Iraq dam could collapse at any time

Russia Herald

Iraq’s largest dam is in danger of collapsing.

In May, the U.S told Iraqi authorities to make Mosul Dam a national priority, because a collapse would unleash a 65ft wave of water on the city of 1.7 million people.

The dam has been built on water-soluble gypsum, which causes seepage.

A U.S-funded reconstruction project was started to help shore up the dam but has not been completed, causing the Iraqi government to issue statements to allay the fears of Mosul residents.

While the Iraqi government is telling people not to be alarmed, a catastrophic failure of the Mosul Dam could result in flooding along the Tigris River all the way to Baghdad.

The U.S is concerned reconstruction of the dam has been plagued by mismanagement and potential fraud.

The Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction has found multiple failures in several of the 21 contracts awarded to repair the dam.

Among the faults were faulty construction and delivery of improper parts, as well as projects which were not completed despite full payments having been made.
