The terrible turmoil in the Middle East has churned out a morass of claims and counter-claims that can boggle the mind. I challenge just one contention and that is that no country offered Jews refuge from the Nazis during World War II. Harrison Salisbury, assistant editor of The New York Times, wrote in his book, 900 Days, The Defense of Leningrad, that the Soviet Union threw open its doors but only 50,000 Jews took advantage of the invitation.
