Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Under this historic accord, Ontario will require producers to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from transportation fuels by 10 percent by 2020. Canada's most populated province and America's most populated state will thus join forces to overcome the challenge they have set for themselves.
The proposed emission reduction is tantamount to removing 700,000 cars from the roads. Now that's some serious action!
Corn is one of the main crops used to produce ethanol.
In order to achieve the 10 percent goal, oil companies can turn to several options to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, such as replacing crude oil by lighter mixes, increasing the availability of E85 fuel (85 percent ethanol) and raising the level of ethanol in regular fuel (the current norm is 5 percent).
According to Ethanol Greenfield executives, mixing ethanol with gasoline appears to be the ideal solution. Therefore, expect to see an increase in ethanol demand in Ontario.
