For humorous balance we’ve got a piece by Maureen Dowd of The New York Times, one of the world’s top columnists, telling about how she surrendered her column to Stephen Colbert, one of the world’s top satirists. Colbert’s column is a hoot. Back to serious, we have Frank Rich of The New York Times telling Americans that ‘It’s time to confront the darker reality that we are lying to ourselves.’
Chinese Communist election worries
We have three pieces on China. One comes by way of the Reuters news agency that tells us that the Communist Party leaders are worried about losing elections for favoured candidates. The other two are simply straight reporting from the Chinese point of view. Finally on China, we have Money and Markets holding up the rightwing of the political/economic spectrum by telling us that the China market is still a great place to invest.
Update on Diabetes
An explosion of new research is vastly changing scientists’ understanding of diabetes and giving new clues about how to attack it. Until very recently, the regulation of glucose — how much sugar is present in a person’s blood, how much is taken up by cells for fuel, and how much is released from energy stores — was regarded as a conversation among a few key players: the pancreas, the liver, muscle and fat. Now, however, the party is proving to be much louder and more complex than anyone had shown before.
Logistics
Due to logistical problems publication of this issue has been delayed until Wednesday night. Therefore we’ve pulled report and comment on the throne speech. On Friday we’ll have a hard-hitting analysis of what’s happening on the Hill.
Looking forward
