QUEBEC — According to the Montreal Gazette the Quebec government has announced that it will be the first province in Canada to introduce a carbon tax on gasoline.
The 0.8-cent per litre carbon tax will go into force Oct 1.
Natural Resources Minister Claude Bechard said he hopes the oil companies, who are reporting record profits, would absorb the tax, which he said is based on the principle polluters pays.
"That (the principle) is not negotiable," the minister said.
The carbon tax will raise $200 million a year to finance Quebec's plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and favour public transit.
