RCMP–U.S. army act to stop public
meeting by the Council of Canadians

OTTAWA — Stuart Trew, Communications Administrator of The Council of Canadians, said yesterday that his organization has been denied a venue to oppose a security partnership meeting involving Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

“This may sound completely incredible but it is true,” said Mr. Trew, “The Council of Canadians has been blocked by the RCMP and the U.S. Army from holding a public forum on the Security and Prosperity Partnership!

“But you can help us make sure we get the word out on deep integration.”

Mr. Trew said, “The SPP was a pledge to speed up the corporate agenda for continental economic integration by linking it to U.S. government security demands and a continental security perimeter. Dozens of working groups are putting this agenda for North America in motion even though it has never been debated in Canada, Mexico, or the United States.

“The Council of Canadians wanted to change that. We had put a $100 deposit down on a community centre in Papineauville, west of Montebello, the site of the three-country meeting.

“We were finalizing a list of panelists for a public forum on the SPP to coincide with the next leaders summit in Montebello, Quebec on August 20 and 21.

“All it took was $100 to open up the SPP to debate by all Canadians.

“Then out of nowhere we found out the RCMP and U.S. Army were kicking us out!”

The Council of Canadians has been told that there will be checkpoints at Thurso and Hawkesbury, both 25 kilometres outside of the Chateau Montebello where George Bush, Stephen Harper and Felipe Calderon will be meeting.

“What is the Harper government afraid of? And why are they trying to stop all open and public debate about the SPP? We can’t let them shut the public out of this crucial discussion on the future of our country within North America,” said Mr. Trew.

The Council of Canadians is now scrambling to find a new location for its public forum on the SPP and the deep integration agenda behind it.

“We’re also trying desperately to secure new speakers so that we can get the message out that Canadians are opposed to the SPP and opposed to deep integration. We need your help to make this public forum happen.”
